10 Tips to Help You Sleep Better

Adequate and good quality SLEEP is critical to staying in sync with our biological clock. To ensure restful sleep every night, Dr. Ni suggests you form your own routines and rituals that help you go to sleep. Visit our website for more info: www.jadestaracupuncture.com

In his book, "Secrets of Self-Healing" by Dr. Maoshing Ni,  he states that our bodies run best with consistent routines.  Well, I am as boring and consistent as a grandfather clock, but lately I have been waking up every two hours (which would be great if I had a baby in the house) and even though I don't have much trouble going back to sleep, I know I would be sharper during the day if my sleep was deep and uninterrupted.

Adequate and good quality SLEEP is critical to staying in sync with our biological clock. To ensure restful sleep every night, Dr. Ni suggests you form your own routines and rituals that help you go to sleep.

These are some of the tricks I am now trying along with acupuncture:

  1. Hot baths
  2. Foot massage
  3. Journaling
  4. Meditation
  5. Aromatherapy
  6. Relaxing music
  7. Reading spiritual books
  8. Praying (praying usually manages to get me to sleep!)
  9. Taking a quiet evening stroll.
  10. At Jade Star Acupuncture we have many Chinese herbal formulas to help encourage sleep, including this Herb Pac called ‘iSleep’.  It’s 100% herbal and you can drink it as a tea or place a small amount of granules on the back of your tongue and swallow with water or juice.

5 Health Benefits of Dry Brushing

Have you heard of dry brushing?

This ancient technique is becoming popular in health circles and is recommended by naturopaths, massage therapists, and other holistic practitioners.

It is a very simple act of brushing your skin with a natural fiber brush. Usually the brush is made from a course but all natural fiber like tampico, which is an agave plant, and a handle of beechwood. Here is the one I use.

Learn 5 great health benefits of dry brushing and why you should start today!

How to do it:

  1. Just before you get in the shower or bath, grab your handy dandy brush!
  2. Starting at your feet, gently brush your dry skin upwards. I start at the ankle and work up to the knee, and then around the thigh brushing up towards my hips, giving good attention to my butt(you'll find out why later on).
  3. Continue to brush up your stomach towards your chest. Always brushing towards your heart.
  4. Then brush from your wrists up to your shoulders.
  5. And then your shoulders and neck area down towards your heart.
  6. Skip your face! The brush is too rough.
The amount of pressure should not be painful or actually scratching your skin. You want it gentle but not too much so. You will learn a good balance.

Why should you be brushing your body with a dry rough bristle brush?

5 Health Benefits of Dry Brushing

  1. Get rid of that dead skin! Dry brushing will help remove that layer of dead skin before you get in the shower and help you have a closer shave, but also will help clear out pores. Removing that dry skin also helps the appearances, no more dullness!
  2. Get your lymphatic system working! Did you know you have miles and miles of lymphatic tubes running throughout your body? Dry brushing will help to stimulate your lymph glandes to get pumping and dump those toxins out of your body. You lymphs could use a little support!
  3. REDUCE CELLULITE! yes you read that right! I am no scientist so here is a quote from Self Magazine on how it works: "Because dry brushing helps eliminate toxins, many pros claim it can smooth those unsightly lumps and bumps for good. Annet King, director of global education for Dermalogica and the International Dermal Institute, says the procedure helps remove “stagnant toxins” that break down connective tissue, leading to cellulite."
  4. Improve your digestion! Our skin is pretty amazing and this simple act of dry brushing will actually go deep enough to move the toxins out of your body faster, which will help to strengthen your kidney function and give you better digestion too.
  5. Wake You up! Tired? Just woke up? This is an amazing way to get your day going the right way! Not only will you feel great knowing you are detoxing you skin, you have glowing skin, and the act of actually dry brushing will stimulate all those nerve endings and wake you up! Then you can get in the shower, wash off that dead skin and toxins and have a fabulous day!
Here is a great image from Smart Living Network that helps you see which direction to brush.
Want to know 5 great benefits of dry brushing? Jade Star Acupuncture shares why you should start using this ancient technique to improve your life.

Happy Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year of the Sheep: February 19th

Jade Star Acupuncture post by Danube Jacobs about the Chinese New Year in 2015

Was last year a doozy for you? Lots of challenges, struggles and uncomfortable shifting? Well, consider those growing pains - a painful transition toward a more settled and self-aware (and freer!) you. Sometimes it takes some discomfort to change for the better. As the year of the sheep/ram/goat approaches get ready to move away from what may have been a challenging past 12 months (at least for me and most of the people I know, anyway!) to a more peaceful, nurturing and creative year. The Green Wood Sheep symbolizes peace, community, goodwill and the arts.

The sheep is of a Yin nature, which promises a more tranquil, loving and nurturing year than the previous one.

The sheep is of a Yin nature, which promises a more tranquil, loving and nurturing year than the previous one.

This shall be a year to focus on healing - on all levels. Think about including more self-care practices into your weekly routine such as massage, art therapy, acupuncture, yoga and a good internal cleanse. For me I've started to take up a more regular yoga practice. After years of "dappling" here and there, picking up a class on a whim or when a friend asked, I've recently made a commitment to get on the mat with instruction at least 3 times a week. And man! I finally get what this whole yoga craze is all about!

I feel so clear, strong and centered than ever before. I still fall over (a lot) and am waiting for that day when downward dog feels like a "resting pose," but each week I notice an improvement and I'm looking forward to watching how the practice shall continue to shape my world for the better.

The Green color and the Wood element of this year's sheep both symbolize growth and creativity. This is a year of working consistently toward one's goals with joy, embracing the Chinese saying, "Diligence applied to hard work ensures prosperity." It is with gradual and steadfast efforts that our dreams will manifest, for the good of all. This is a year of community, banding together and joining forces with others who believe in making the world a better place. Is there an art class you've been wanting to take or a singing, gardening or political group you want to be a part of? Now is the time to go for it and do that thing that makes your heart sing or the work that feels like your calling.

Now's the time to find your outlet and your people to share that interest and nurture that bliss. Is it an African dance class or getting on that bicycle more or writing a blog for that organization you're passionate about? Join forces with others and work together toward this goal, or find your support team to cheer you on along the way. I recently started painting again, something I used to love as a child, that I put on a shelf as an adult, telling myself I was too busy (learning and practicing Chinese medicine) or that I wasn't good enough to make it worthwhile. But the truth is, when I do make time to play, yes "play" and draw, paint or doodle, it is always fun and worthwhile, and that is the true goal, not the outcome on paper, but how soul-fulfilling it is. So this year, I encourage you to feed your soul and play more!

It is also a time to get back to basics and to use a greater intuition to find solutions to problems. This would be a great year to start a meditation practice or to take an existing one a level deeper. Spend more time in nature, a surefire way to tap into the slower pace of life and its answers. Qi Gong is also a wonderful, effective practice for increasing intuition. (Keep an eye out for our future blog on Qi Gong and its benefits coming up soon).

Are you thinking, "But what about my busy life and demanding job which remain at a hectic pace?" Well, it just may be that they shall seem less so this year, or that coping seems a whole lot easier. Do not be afraid to reach out to others and to seek out those modalities and tools to bring more peace and harmony into your daily life. The year of the sheep supports this.

Once you feel tapped into that calming, nourishing, joyful spirit of the sheep share those vibrations with those around you. Radiate them out into the world around you, touching every soul you meet. That's what the year of the Green Wood Sheep is all about. Enjoy it!

Why I Love Gratitude (And You Should, Too!)

What does being grateful mean to you?

To me it means being present; it means being able to be alive in the moment and honestly count my blessings. Expressing gratitude gives me a feeling that lifts me and I feel that gratefulness has a high vibrational frequency that feeds your soul.

Many of my patients and friends know about how I was lead to acupuncture and how I found this happiness that I now hold. And for those of you who don’t, let me share. About a decade ago I was in a marriage that was full of disharmony. There was fighting and discontent, and a new baby that came into the world at only 29 weeks. It was a difficult time. And it got more difficult when my son at 15 months old became seriously ill. My ex husband had left us, we lived in a house I couldn't afford, and my small baby was in the ICU. My son recovered fully after 3 months in the ICU and a year of recovery at home; during this time I quit my job, lost my house, and started a new path in life.

My son Casey at 4 years old

Thankfully I have the most wonderful family; my sister let us live with her rent free and they all helped with my son. I am full of gratitude for the support they offered and because gratitude is reciprocal I truly believe that all their love and support bonded our family in ways I can't express in words.

During those years I found myself lost and honestly angry with God for taking away the "life" I thought I was building. It took many years for me to release that anger and transform it into gratitude. With my families support I finished credits at Pima Community College that I needed to get into acupuncture school and started that journey. While trying to decide what to do with my life to support myself and my son, I threw my hands up in the air and prayed for God to show me what I was supposed to do. I was sitting in front of the computer and hoped that God would guide my search; I was Google'd to the acupuncture school. This time I decided to listen and made my appointment to check the school out. The very second my feet hit the pavement at the school the interview day, I knew with every fiber in me that this was the path for me.

School was half about learning Chinese medicine and half about healing myself in order to best help others to heal. It was grueling and intense, and I often wondered if I would have the strength to get through it. I am so incredibly grateful for the strength that I was granted to survive and graduate. I must confess that the anger I held stayed with me even after school. It wasn't until I was telling my story to a patient who said "you seem very angry about this past, but it all led you here", that I realized it was time to change inside.

I started thinking about all the things that I feel grateful for.... and do you know what? There's so many things!!!
  • My families love and support
  • My precious son and his life
  • My freedom from a crappy marriage
  • An amazing career that allows me to help others love their lives
  • A beautiful clinic
  • And so many more things
I can break down my gratitude to things as small as being present for the smell of a fresh pot of coffee brewing in the house I can now afford where there is love and happiness. I can go big and think how much gratitude I have that we have such a beautiful Earth to live on and the vast possibilities for humankind to experience life fully.

Now into my fourth year of private practice, it brings me to tears when I think how grateful I am for my life. The clinic that I created now employees some of my favorite people and helps so many in the community on several different levels; it has grown past me and now belongs to those that know us. This clinic has created a relationship with my sister (who is our magnificent practice manager) that fills me with joy. It brought Danube into our lives; and she is one of the best people I've ever met. Chinese medicine has allowed me to help my son heal more and carry less baggage with him through life. And to top it all off, this clinic (and some praying) brought a man into my life that makes my heart skip a beat and he has amazing children that I love. The gratitude I hold for this clinic which has helped heal me and so many others is simply magical.

When I found myself in the middle of turmoil and discontentment it was extremely difficult to feel grateful. At one point when my son was ill, I even thought about killing myself if he died. Being low is such a heavy burden, it can be hard to see the light. Through love and prayer I was able to persevere. And now as I look back I am thankful for this past decade, it allows me to be truly grateful for the blessings I hold and wish such happiness upon others.

Casey and I at Disneyland having a blast!

If you find yourself in the middle of a black hole, I hope my story will inspire you that life can be better. It can be amazing!

Dig deep and think of something small or something big that you can express gratitude for... it'll change your life for the best.

Try it now... what are you grateful for? Share with us...

You can share this on Facebook or Google+ with your comments about what you are grateful for!

How Acupuncture Helps with Grief, Sadness, and Loss

By strengthening the Lung organ system and balancing the Qi, or energy, in both the emotional and physical body, the patient will began to feel more grounded, held and better able to cope with the loss.

This is the time of year we pull winter boxes marked "sweaters" out of storage, replace chilled soups with hearty stews and gather around fireplaces in warm, cozy living spaces with our closest friends and family.

It feels appropriate that in Chinese medicine, the emotion that is associated with the Autumn Metal element is grief, for it represents a time of consolidating and bringing things closer, like a big hug, that were scattered around during the summer.

There are a total of five emotions in Chinese medicine, one for each season and element:
  • Fall - Metal - Grief
  • Winter - Water - Fear
  • Spring - Wood - Anger
  • Summer - Fire - Overjoy
  • Late Summer -Earth - Worry
All are appropriate for certain circumstances for a certain amount of time.

This is the time of year we pull winter boxes marked "sweaters" out of storage, replace chilled soups with hearty stews and gather around fireplaces in warm, cozy living spaces with our closest friends and family.

It is only natural for someone to grieve when they suffer the loss of a loved one, a pet, or the end of a relationship or physical ability. So, what makes any of these healthy emotions pathological or hazardous to our health? It is difficult to say just when someone should stop grieving, for it's such a personal issue and different for each individual.

Generally, as acupuncturists we see an emotion as pathological when it is in too extreme a state for too long a time, and the body will tell us when this is happening. Signs of imbalance will show up on the tongue and within the pulse. Acupuncture can be of incredible help to those suffering from grief or sadness, whether immediately after a loss, when it is a challenge to carry out daily activities; or months or even years later when one still feels the pangs of grief and struggles to "move on."

By strengthening the Lung organ system and balancing the Qi, or energy, in both the emotional and physical body, the patient will began to feel more grounded, held and better able to cope with the loss.

By strengthening the Lung organ system and balancing the Qi the patient will began to feel more grounded, held and better able to cope with grief and loss.

Real Patient Experiences:

I think of a young patient who came to see me two years after being in a plane crash. She survived but the pilot did not. For the first time in her 19 years, she was having asthma symptoms. It was clear after talking with her and reading her pulses that her sadness about the pilot's death was beginning to affect her lung function.
With regular acupuncture treatment and additional work with a counselor, she is back to playing softball and running.

There has also been several instances when a patient who had come in for something unrelated, cried during a treatment. I've experienced this firsthand. Silent tears filled up my ears as I lay face up on the treatment table listening to the sound of soft waves crashing and thinking, "what is happening, why am I crying?," not knowing the cause of the release.

Sometimes grief is lodged deep within and only when we "open the channels" and get the energy moving, do these emotions dislodge and rise to the surface on their way out. I remembered feeling lighter and having a great sense of peace after that treatment, as other patients have also shared who've experienced this.

It is a belief in Chinese medicine that every physical condition has an emotional cause.

With most sadness or loss, time is the best healer. Acupuncture can help make that time feel less overwhelming, more livable and help keep the body balanced during the transition.

If you are interested in trying acupuncture for grief, sadness, or to overcome an old deep hurt our acupuncturists at Jade Star Acupuncture will be able to help. Seasonal Changes as we Welcome Autumn in Tucson

Autumn is the time of year to consolidate, store up and prepare for the quiet and stillness of winter. It is the transition period between the most yang time of year (summer) and the most yin time (winter). It is time to be less active and scattered than previous months and more reflective and grounded.
Autumn is the time of year to consolidate, store up and prepare for the quiet and stillness of winter. Find out more about how acupuncture can help at: http://goo.gl/VLMMWp

In Chinese medicine, the Fall season is represented by the color white, the climate of dryness, the Lungs and Large Intestine organs, the skin and body hair and the emotion of grief. If one has allergies, this is the season to fortify the lungs and prepare for the upcoming spring season. It is also an especially effective time to process grief and boost the immune system.

If you do feel symptoms of a cold, flu, or grief and sadness this time of year, please come see us. Acupuncture is great at helping ease the transition of the seasons and prevent sickness from developing. We also have an herbal pharmacy with great remedies and teas to help too.

Office Updates!

Hi Friends,

If you have not been to our office lately then you haven't seen our beautiful new lobby. Here is a few glimpses of what it looks like now.

We decided the office needed a fresh new look so we sectioned off half the lobby with a room divider from Ikea so now the lobby is smaller and cozier. The colors are all very calming, soothing, and relaxing so the space is much nicer. We now offer free wifi to our patients and their friends or family who are waiting for them. We also have a nice selection of teas to enjoy before or after your treatment.

Here is a few photos so you can see a little bit of what it looks like.

Both rooms now have a calming zen like feeling and we also have made the walls sound proof! So you will hear less of the outside noise or neighboring business noise, which is great to help you relax and enjoy your acupuncture treatment.

We would love to have you back in for a treatment to see the fresh new look of the office and enjoy a relaxing balancing treatment. Give us a call at 520-881-0827!

How Big Are The Needles?

Who likes needles? Not most of us!

Surprisingly only 20% of people have a true fear or phobia of needles. Source

The rest of us just don't like being poked very much. I still don't like to have my blood drawn with that big needle, and I avoid shots in general but if I ever do have to get one it's not the most fun experience. But I am here to tell you that acupuncture needles are so much smaller and not even near as painful. If you have never had acupuncture then you are probably wondering "Does it hurt?" and I am here to tell you it does not!

The needles the acupuncturist uses are actually in the filament, or filiform, category instead of needle. They are not hollow like a needle to draw your blood. The thin needles are made of stainless steel so they are flexible but will not break. After each use the needles are disposed of them so they are never reused. Usually before the needle is placed the area is wiped with alcohol to sterilize the skin.

Here is a great comparison of the acupuncture needle to a sewing needle, syringe, and match stick:

Size of the acupuncture needle can vary from 13 to 130mm in length. At Jade Star Acupuncture, Jennifer usually uses a mm needle for most uses. When doing facial acupuncture, also known as Mei Zen Cosmetic Acupuncture, she uses mm needles. The diameter of the needles ranges from .16mm to .46mm, and the face needles are mm wide.

Here is a variety of different needles used for different areas of the body and for different reasons:

What is most important to note I think is the fact that needles do not go deep into the skin usually. Most people seem to have a fear that the needle is going to go too deep or cause pain inside but generally the needle is only 1/4 inch into the skin. In areas where you have thin skin like your face or wrist the needles are even more shallow, they are just barely set into the skin and will sometimes even fall out. Areas with thicker tissue such as the buttocks will take a much longer needle and go in 3-4 inches to treat sciatica.

In my experience with acupuncture, what makes the biggest difference is the practitioner and how they insert the needles. From what I have learned there are different methods to how the needle can be placed and an acupuncturist that is very skilled will cause the least amount of pain with insertion. The areas that still hurt are usually areas that need treatment. Such as if you are having intestinal issues and a needle is placed at a point that is meant for digestion problems, then it may be painful, but the pain subsides quickly.

My hope is that this information will help ease your worry about the size and potential pain from the acupuncture needle. If you have any questions, comments, or are ready to schedule an appointment, please give us a call at 520-881-0827.

Dragon’s Blood Stops Bleeding and Heals Wounds

Dragon's Blood

Also known as Xue Jie, Daemonoropis Resina, or Draconis Sanguis.

I’ll admit it… I’m a nerd! I love the idea of dragons and when I learned about this herb I was instantly in love! Not only does it have a great name but the visual of Dragon’s Blood is beautiful! Dark red, iron-like and shiny, it’s just amazing!

Dragon’s Blood is actually the resin secretion from Daemononrops draco. Mature fruit is collected and dried, then put in a basket with rough sea shells. The basket is shaken so all the resin falls off the fruit, then it is sifted and wrapped in a cloth bag and boiled until it melts. After it melts, it is removed from the bag and cooled and often stamped with a gold mark to identify the product.
Dragons blood fruit is used in Chinese Medicine to heal skin wounds and stop bleeding.

You will find Dragon’s Blood (xue jie) in Alpine Herb’s remedy called Myrrh Liniment. The reason I added this in my recipe is because the resin generates flesh, assists sores and wounds to heal and stops bleeding. When combined with Olibanum aka Frankincense (ru xiang) and Myrrha (mo yao) they all promote movement when blood as stagnated, stop pain, generate flesh, reduce swelling, and assist the healing of sores.

Acupuncture Treatment for Children

Did you know that acupuncture can help children too? I have a 5 year old boy that came in for treatment for acid re-flux that was extremely painful and deeply worried his parents on what to do for him. After only 3 treatments and an herbal formula, the re-flux is gone and he is pain free.

I've also treated a 9 year old for juvenile arthritis which is dramatically worse during his growth spurts. In conjunction with his rhumatologist, we have developed a treatment plan that eases his pain during times of growth and has eliminated it otherwise. This child came in for treatment daily for the first week and then twice a week for a couple months. Now I see him during his growth times.

As most of us know kids seem to get a lot of colds and I see many children for this. Often I do cupping therapy for colds on children.

A 11 year old girl has been receiving treatment for the sadness she feels from being bullied at school. She is able to process these emotions through acupuncture.

A 15 year old boy with cluster migraines for several months came in and through pulse balancing his migraines have not returned and he said to me, "I feel like I can just be myself again".

I think as adults we often think children have it easy, but they get stressed and have pain and heartache too. Through the treatment of acupuncture they can better process and digest their lives so they well adjusted people as they get older, instead of holding onto baggage that they don't need.

Pulse Diagnosis

I just recently took a CEU class(Continuing Education Credit) to learn how to balance the pulses better and I'd like to share a little about pulses since this is something we learn as a foundation but it is important to hone our skills as acupuncturists. Dr. Martha Lucas from Colorado taught the 3 day class and she really opened my eyes to what we the objective truly is when reading pulses. Pulse balance is the exact objective of an acupuncture treatment.

To me, the goal as an acupuncturist is to open pathways to let the patient be able to create their own healing process.

Through pulse diagnosis we can see many aspects of a patients life, from childhood to adulthood. When feeling the pulse in the Spleen position it not only tells about the current digestion of the patient but also if the patient has had spiritual nurturing in their life or not. By understanding the root or core of a patient via their pulses it allows me to treat current conditions fully and to the best of my ability. Point selection is still important however instead of using protocols out of text books, pulse balancing allows me to truly treat each person as an individual each time they come in for the imbalances they have at the moment. When your pulses are balanced your Qi is balanced and you feel like the best version of yourself. If you want to feel what balanced is liked, give us a call to schedule your appointment.

Are You A Super Giver?

Lately I have been thinking about some patients that I have and how they are super givers. These are some of the nicest people you can meet. They take amazing care of their family and home, plus they are excellent employees or business owners. They care about community, ethics, the importance of parenthood, and the happiness of others. They have another thing in common, they don't give to themselves.

  • Are you one of these givers?
  • Do you have a family that you support in many aspects?
  • And a job that wants 100% of you?
  • And a house that has never ending dishes and laundry?

There is a lot of pressure on women especially to be perfect at everything and the givers of the world. They give until they are drained.

Well I am here to give you permission to give to yourself. And you know what? You will be a better giver to others by making sure you are taken care of. I often ask patients to spend just 15 minutes daily plus 1 hour a week on yourself.

There are so many things you can do in 15 minutes. Here is a short list: meditate, give yourself a mani or pedi, do a facial, take a short walk, play with a pet, read a book for fun. I would love to see other ideas you have, so please leave comments.

For the hour weekly you can come get acupuncture and decompress from the past week. Let someone else take care of you for an hour! Acupuncture is fantastic at nourishing the mind, body, and spirit to rejuvenate you. With balanced Qi you will once again feel like yourself able to go out and nurture others. Some other ideas you could do for an hour are get a massage, take a yoga/tai chi/exercise class, or a pottery/painting class, how about an uninterrupted hour of planning a dream vacation... really the possibilities are endless.

Just like practicing any new healthy habit you will get better over time taking care of yourself. In the beginning it may seem hard to give your self permission to take the time, so that is why I am giving it to start. If you would really like to supplement your support beyond this permission letter then regular acupuncture treatments are highly recommended. Also, let your family know what you are doing and how it benefits them too. So you can be a better listener, a better homework helper, a better chef, and mostly able to love greater because your needs are met too.

I wish you all great gifts of time to yourself! I give you permission! You deserve it Super Giver!

5 Ways Acupuncture Can Improve Your Life

Acupuncture is a pretty amazing Alternative Therapy and only a small percentage of people have tried it in America. Here are a few reasons to help you see how it can improve your own life. The great thing to remember about acupuncture is that it can only help or do nothing at all, it cannot make your symptoms worse or cause further problems. So why not give it a try.

Here are 5 ways acupuncture can improve your life:

  1. Relieve Pain - So many people suffer with some kind of pain, either from an old injury or something recent that will go away easily. Either way, acupuncture can help. The number one reason people try acupuncture in America is for pain. Many are in chronic pain and let's be honest a life high on pain medications is no way to live. Chinese medicine usually says pain is a result of stagnation of either Qi and/or Blood, in order to reduce or clear pain we move Qi and Blood.
  2. Increase Happiness
Acupuncture will help you find balance in your life, your emotions, your thoughts; you will feel more clear. A lack of balance is exactly what acupuncture addresses. The practitioner listens to your pulses and finds areas of imbalance, either excess or deficiency such as a lack or energy flowing, and restores it by placing needles in certain acupuncture points. Acupuncture studies have been proven that particular points release serotonin and other happy endorphins to change your attitude.
  3. Remember what Relaxed Feels Like - Acupuncture is great at changing your autonomic nervous system from flight or fight to rest and digest. Many people forget what rest and digest is with all the electronics and demands of today's world. However, it is an important part of your day to make this switch. It may prevent a future heart attack or other serious ailments.
  4. Improve Sleep
There are hormones that you produce only in REM sleep and if you areunable to achieve REM then you are missing out on your bodies ability to function at its best. One of the best side effects of any acupuncture treatment is a great nights rest. Plus we can simply work on improving your sleep; whether the problem is staying asleep or falling asleep.
  5. Strengthen Immune System - Also a strength of acupuncture and herbs is the ability to improve your immune system. Many patients report hardly ever getting sick when they come for treatments regularly, even when their kids bring home really nasty colds. In Chinese medicine we call your immune system Wei Qi and this is what we boost in your treatment to keep you healthy.

Are You Stressed Out?

Stress is a killer.

It truly is. Americans are more connected to their electronics and hectic lives than ever before. Do you know anyone who does not own a cell phone today? When was the last time that you spent five minutes and focused only on your breathing? Are you aware of how much caffeine is too much?
You might find it surprising too that young adults are the most stressed out of all Americans!

75% of adults reported experiencing moderate to high levels of stress in the past month and nearly half reported that their stress has increased in the past year – American Psychological Association
So we are all getting more stressed out and feeling more anxiety, but yet we are still spending more and more time staying busy. Busy isn't all that it is cracked up to be. "Sorry, I can't hang out, I'm super busy with yoga, work, getting the kids to school, taking a cooking class, cleaning the house, feeding the dog,  and running a marathon...all while constantly checking my Facebook, posting to Twitter and Instagram." Sound familiar? If you are nodding your head or laughing than you might just be plagued with busy. Don't worry! We can help!

First, start by putting down that second iced venti carmel macchiato. Second, close your eyes and spend 5 minutes just breathing. Focus on each breath going in and out and how it feels in your throat, lungs, stomach. Hopefully that helps for a little while but for the long term we have great news: acupuncture can help relieve stress!

Chinese medicine will tell you that stress is usually liver qi(chi) stagnation. What acupuncture does in general is to balance out your entire system: the mind, body and spirit. While stress disturbs the spirit which can make it hard to sleep and lead to insomnia or leave you feeling like you are rested. Stress also keeps your body in a fight or flight response which increases your cortisol levels. If you stay in that response long enough your cortisol cannot go back to normal levels which creates that flattering belly fat that doesn't go away no matter how many sit ups you do. Being in that fight or flight response long enough with high cortisol levels also turns off that switch which allows your body to chose fight or flight or rest and digest. Acupuncture gives you back the ability to have that switch and chose which way it goes. It gives you the ability to change your autonomic nervous system.

Being in a constant state of fight or flight makes it so you forget what relaxed feels like. It is common that after leaving your stress focused acupuncture treatment, you will feel what jokingly we call "acu-stoned." You will feel so relaxed and almost as though you are floating, be careful driving home! This might be a foreign feeling to your mind but really, this is what relaxed is supposed to feel like. Our mind and body just forgot.

Now that acupuncture helped your body find that on/off switch again so you can feel rest and digest instead of fight or flight it will be easier to do this on your own and stay relaxed at the appropriate times.

When you come for treatment for stress we will discuss your diagnosis thoroughly and help you find out what you can do to continue balanced health and wellness. Since you might leave feeling a little out of it in your "acu-stoned" state, we will give you a folder with instructions and reminders on living a less stressful life for you to reference later. Until you feel again balanced again, we suggest getting weekly acupuncture treatments.

Also here is some helpful info about staying relaxed after your weekly treatment:

  • avoid watching tv or playing computer/phone games the rest of the day. This activates the fight or flight response in your brain.
  • avoid caffeine the rest of the day
  • do something calming you enjoy such as reading a book, doing yoga or tai chi, taking the dog for a walk, cooking a meal, gardening.
  • drink lots of water and eat a healthy meal to nourish your body
  • schedule your next visit to stay stress free

Pain Relief

Pain relief is one of the top 5 reasons our patients initially seek our help and choose acupuncture. Nearly everyone has experienced pain in their life and many suffer from chronic pain. Reasons for pain can be multiple things or just one such as:

  • pulled muscle or sports injury
  • migraines or headaches
  • arthritis
  • sprained/strained ankle
  • whiplash or other injury from auto accident
  • lower back pain
  • TMJ
  • tennis elbow
  • menstrual cramps
Using acupuncture is a safe alternative to traditional Western medicine. The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine notes that "there are fewer adverse effects associated with acupuncture than with many standard drug treatments (such as anti-inflammatory medication and steroid injections) used to manage painful musculoskeletal conditions."

How does it work?

From an Oriental medicine point of view pain is considered stagnation of Qi (chi/energy) and blood and it can either be an excess or deficiency situation. Excess Qi is relieved by massage or touch and a deficiency of Qi is usually more painful upon touch. If you have pain in your neck and shoulders this is usually an excess. And if you have pain in your lower back area this is usually a deficiency of Qi. By determining where the pain is in your body and how bad it is on a scale of 1 to 10, we can determine if you have an excess or deficiency of Qi and blood.

During the initial appointment we will ask questions such as what is your pain on a 1 to 10 scale. Everyone may have a different idea of what 10 is but this way if you are at an 8 or 9 pain level initially and you leave your appointment at a 6 or 7 then we know that acupuncture does work for you so this is the beginning of your pain relief. With further treatments we continue to reduce pain and bring your pain level to a zero and at this point we continue maintenance to have lasting wellness.

How long does it take?

For acute pain that has been occurring for 3 months or less this will generally take 3-5 treatments. For chronic pain that has been occurring for more than 3 months healing will take longer depending on the injury. With chronic pain that took years to build up it can take a year or so to undo. Each time you leave though you will have improvement and by getting regular treatment we will help your body heal itself. Your body has the ability to heal itself and by using acupuncture we are encouraging your own systems to clear the Qi blockages, excesses, and deficiencies and allow the Qi and blood to flow as it should and create a natural homeostasis.

Real Patient Experience with Pain Relief

Over a year ago we had a patient come to Jade Star who was in her 30's and had been in pain since she was involved in a vehicle accident when she was  18 years old. This was a very traumatic accident that she was lucky to live through. Since the accident she had been suffering with back and neck pain on a daily basis and over the years she tried massage, chiropractic care, pain medication, muscle relaxers and physical therapy. Her pain was so bad that she had limited range of motion and difficulty enjoying time with her children and husband. She had mentioned it was hard to find joy with the pain dominating her life.

When this patient first started treatment she was seen twice a week for the first 3 months with improvement after each visit. For the last 9 months we have been seeing her once a week to continue improvement and now that she has had such significant pain relief she is on a maintenance phase and has acupuncture treatment 2-3 times per month. Eventually she will be seen just as needed to help balance her Qi. Also, we would like to note that she is no longer on any of her medications!

Every patient and injury is unique but this is a good example of how an old injury can take time to heal but it will work and you can live your life pain free again. If you are living with pain either chronic or a recent injury, call us today to make an appointment to start your healing process. Acupuncture does work and it is safe! We can help you avoid harmful medications that will only cause other issues.

Acupuncture For Newbies

Something like 38% of adults have tried alternative medicine in the United States. That's a good amount but I think we can do better, especially with how smart we are with our overall health nowadays. Everyone is talking about eating right, avoiding GMO's, going vegan, trying the paleo diet, etc.

So complementary alternative medicine is a mixture of acupuncture, chiropractic, tai chi, yoga, meditation, and lots more. Most people I know have tried yoga a few times, some people are regulars with it. Meditation is helpful and seems just about as trendy as yoga. A lot of people are skeptical about chiropractic work but others swear by it (especially after a car accident). While acupuncture is a whole other world to most people; I'd like to walk all the newbies through a typical acupuncture appointment and treatment to take the frightening "huge painful needles" idea out of your head.

Background info: Jade Star Acupuncture has been in business since December 2011 and is shared by Jennifer Parks and Maurianne Montes. Both ladies are licensed acupuncturists who graduated from The Arizona School of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine. Jade Star focus on acupuncture but a lot of the time that includes gua sha, cupping, moxa... sounds like Chinese huh?! But it's all good stuff and you can sound cool when you tell your friends you got "gua sha'd."

How It Works:

  1. So you have an issue that's been bothering you a while and you've tried the usual Western medications that helped temporarily but the issue hasn't gone away. For this example I'm going to use myself and an issue I had last year with anxiety and stress from being overworked and underpaid.
  2. Stress and anxiety issues are usually so annoying that you can't even think of how to fix them in the moment. I tried venting to friends, working out, yoga, sleeping more, eating better, having a cocktail, deep breathing, everything I could think of to let go of my day and forget about my work stress so I could enjoy the rest of my life.
  3. Making the appointment is easy, just call Jade Star at 881-0827 and see what time is available, so that's what I finally did. It was such a stressful day I actually left work early and drove straight to the office before I had a nervous breakdown. I was lucky enough to get in the same day!
  4. So I walk in and announce who I am to the girl at the desk and she says "Hi! Welcome! I'm Jennifer" with a friendly smile. Okay, this seems painless so far, I just have to sign a few forms and we head to the treatment room.
  5. Jennifer sits down with me at her consult table to ask A LOT of questions. Questions no one ever asks me(like how often I have a bowel movement)! But she reassures me it's all necessary to get to the root of my issues. She explains how in Chinese medicine they do not diagnose like Western medicine, she is not going to tell me I have anxiety but that I have spleen qi(chi) deficiency, or something like that, and then she will use the acupuncture to balance out or replenish that deficiency. So we get through the questionnaire and then she has me lay face up on the massage table and she feels my pulse on my wrist and looks at my tongue(also part of diagnosing my issues).
  6. She explains what is going on with me and my body from a Chinese medicine standpoint and how that relates to what I am experiencing with my symptoms of "stress" and "anxiety." She then tells me how she is going to place the acupuncture needles in different places around my body, make sure nothing hurts, and then leave me to relax for about 20 minutes.
  7. She rolls up my pant legs and places about 12 or 15 needles all over from my calves, between my toes, my wrist, top of my head, center of my chest, and stomach. Most of them I barely felt when they went in, two of them hurt for a few seconds and I'm told those points were to help me "relax" and "stop thinking so much", so maybe that's why they hurt so much. But the pain dissipated very quickly. She then positioned a heat lamp over my feet, asked if I was comfortable and if anything hurt. As she slipped out of the door she instructed me to "just relax."
  8. So I laid there and listened to the relaxing music playing and enjoyed the nice dark room with dim lighting and closed my eyes. I must have fallen asleep because the next thing I knew Jennifer was back in the room asking me how I feel and taking the needles out.
  9. On my drive home afterwards I was a total space cadet! I couldn't hold one thought in my head for more than 2 seconds. I could not even remember the last time I felt so relaxed. Plus I slept like a baby that night! It was fabulous!
Pretty simple right?! It didn't take long, it wasn't painful, and I had amazing results. The next few days I did feel more relaxed and able to handle usually stressful situations at work with ease. But Jennifer did mention that getting regular treatments would really benefit me since nothing can be cured with one try. So I scheduled appointments for once a week and then eventually every two weeks and it really has made a difference in my life. I am generally happier, stress is totally manageable, and I have energy to do things after work and enjoy my life.

So now that you have a little insight on what to expect, hopefully that takes some of the scariness out of it and you'll give it a try.
